British Reggae Artists for Africa

Adam writes… A visit to one of London’s newer squares.

BRAFA Square in Hackney was dedicated in 2021 to commemorate British Reggae Artists Famine Appeal, a supergroup of Black musicians – including Leon Leiffer of The Blackstones (who founded the project), Janet Kay, Aswad and Dennis Brown – who released a charity single in 1985 to raise money for Ethiopian famine relief.

As the iron, street-mounted commemorative plaques remind us that BRAFA was, in part, a response to the lack of Black artists invited to take part in Band Aid.
