Updated 5th March 2024

A walking tour going beyond the music* to find one of the most mythologised, most mis-represented and perhaps most misunderstood decades of the 20th Century…

*Where sex and drugs go, rock’n’roll usually follows – and we will certainly be entertaining Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles along the way.

But we will also widen the search… from sex and drugs and rock’n’roll to include… sex and drugs and politics and fashion and espionage and art and photography and architecture and the class system… and rock’n’roll.

A little bit of something for everyone!*

*Unless you are under 16, of course. This tour comes with a Parental Guidance Warning.

London In the Swinging 60s – BBC Broadcasting House and Radio 1

The People We Will Meet…

Robert Fraser… The old Etonian art dealer who was busted for possession of heroin – friend and art dealer to The Beatles & Stones

John Profumo… The high ranking cabinet minister whose extra-marital sex life caused the fall of the government

Annie Nightingale… Pioneer woman DJ, first female presenter on BBC Radio 1

Brian Epstein… Manager of The Beatles whose sexuality made him a criminal in the eyes of the law

John Stephen… The founder of modern Carnaby Street

Ron and Reg… The Kray Twins, East End gangsters up West

Lesley Hornby… Neasden’s very own proto-supermodel Twiggy

The Places We Will Visit…

Marylebone… the elegant nexus of sedate townhouses whose mews apartments hid a multitude of sins.

Mayfair… the posh West End where the cracks began to appear in the class system.

London In The Swinging 60s – The Post Office Tower

From the start and throughout this tour there are descriptions of scenes of a sexual nature including orgies. Not only that but drug use/misuse is a running theme as well. Suicide is an additional topic discussed. Drugs discussed on the tour include amphetamines, cannabis, L.S.D and heroin. Further to all of that, scenes of violence are described. Of all the walks on the programme this one is probably the least suitable for under 16s.
