Down In The Tube Station At Midnight

Are you a Jam fan? Are you coming to join me for any of my tours that meet at Bond Street Station? (The History Of Rock & Pop Part 4 and Musical Marylebone meet there.) Planning to arrive by Tube? Then keep an eye out for this location on the way to our meeting point at Bond Street Tube Station…

In 1978 The Jam were on a fine run of classic singles. Down In the Tube Station At Midnight, a punk kitchen sink drama about a racially motivated attack on a London Underground platform, made number 15 in the UK charts. It was released in October 1978.

The picture sleeve for the single was shot at Bond Street tube station (see short TikTok vid above)…

The rear of the sleeve paid tribute to The Who‘s legendary drummer Keith Moon

Keith died in nearby Mayfair about a month before the single was released. That location can be found here…

And if it comes up in a pub quiz, the tube train sound effect at the start of The Jam’s incendiary track was not recorded at Bond Street. The location for that recording is St John’s Wood tube station – the nearest tube to the famous Abbey Road studios. You can remind yourself of the sound effect, and the track, here here…

And here’s a little look inside St John’s Wood tube station

You can follow me on TikTok HERE. I add vids from my wanders around London and on my musical travels further afield. It’s updated fairly regularly and I accept requests too! Want to find a location that’s been bugging you but can’t manage to find it? Drop me a line and, if I can find it, I’ll post it on TikTok.
