Syd Barrett 80: Pink Floyd in the 1960s

Adam writes…

January 2026 see the 80th anniversary of Syd Barrett’s birth. To mark the occasion I’m staging a special outing of the Pink Floyd in 1960s London walking tour dedicated to this much mythologised musician.

Pink Floyd In 60s London

Back in the 70s and 80s, Syd’s story was mother’s milk to rock’n’roll fans. He was the first of the acid casualties. A visionary. He saw things we could only imagine. You’ve heard those tales before, I’m sure. And they don’t get any smaller in the constant re-telling.

I think we now appreciate that Syd was never really very well to begin with. And the copious LSD trips did not help his mental health. When I was a teenager, the story was presented to me as an heroic tale. On my Pink Floyd In 60s London walking tour I always aim to do it a better service than that. Don’t get me wrong: this walk is not an anti-drugs rant masquerading as music history. Far from it. I come to praise Syd, not wag my finger.

It’s a tale of a very English revolutionary, a true bohemian. Early Floyd occupy a special place in my heart. And, in my opinion, a hugely important place in the evolution of pop and rock music. From the calamitous joy of Bike to the sinister, minor key blues of Lucifer Sam, Barrett has left us some unique musical stepping stones that we may track pop’s progress from two-minute pop singles to something altogether more experimental.

It’s one of the most fascinating and complex stories in the history of rock and pop. And I hope you’ll be able to join me for its telling on Sunday 4th January 2026.
