Map of the Month No.9

Adam writes… I’ve been trying to think of a way to say Thank You to all of you who support my guided tours in London. And I’ve come up with this… every month a free map! I hope you enjoy them and find them useful. Each month, on or around the 1st, I’ll post a new map. They’ll be curated around a band/act/singer/composer, or a theme, or a neighbourhood, period or genre. Each one will have at least 5 locations for you to explore. Most of them will deal with the London area, but from time-to-time I’ll head off a little further afield as well. I’ll add playlists and links for further reading as well.

London Music Tours Map of the Month No.9: Paul Simon in 1960s England & France

As I post this, we’re gearing up in London for another visit from Paul Simon. His first visit to these shores was back in 1962 and the locations from that, and his subsequent sojourns in 1964, ’65 and ’66, form the basis for tis month’s free map…

The Paul Simon Songbook (1965)

This London classic was deleted for a number of years. happily, it is available again to download and stream. As you can see, my vinyl copy is still going strong. It’s pictured here on my beloved 1965 Dansette Viva… The album was recorded at Levy’s Recording Studio at 73 New Bond Street right here in London (see the map). The girl in the sleeve picture is Simon’s then girlfriend Kathy Chitty, a native of Wales living back then in Essex. Kathy makes her presence felt in the work of Simon and Garfunkel – notably in Kathy’s Song and America. Sleeve location? Only ever recorded as “by the Thames” – so perhaps somewhere in the Limehouse area, near Cable Street where Simon was lodging with the activist, social worker and broadcaster Judith Piepe. All of these locations can be found on the map (above) Listen to The Paul Simon Songbook here…     You can check out the full London Music Tours schedule HERE. Private tours are available the whole year round – use the form at the bottom of this page to arrange a tour for your party or group.
