Calypso comes up on a number of my different London Music Tours. It is one of the key roots musics in the development of British pop and rock and its influence is wide-reaching.
The tracks on the playlist here read like postcards home. Comic vignettes about cricket; the period of nosy landladies; live reporting from the coronation in 1953. But the songs are not without a serous side – interracial relationships and discrimination are also tackled head-on.
