1966 & All That
On 30th July 1966, England defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley Stadium to become World Champions for the first, and so far only time.
Many of the players that day recall that the song of the moment was The Kinks with Sunny Afternoon. By the day of the final that classic track was at number 5 in the UK top 30, having spent two weeks at No.1. The top-selling record of the 30th July is not only a stonewall 60s classic, but a great pub quiz trivia question, too. Chris Farlowe’s version of Out of Time is the only Jagger/Richards composition to hit the top spot being covered by another artist.
The Stones’ songwriting team actually had two hits on the chart that July. At No.25 Twice As Much, a harmony singing duo, are covering Sittin’ On A Fence. (You can find the Stones’ version on the 1969 compilation album Through the Past Darkly.)
Elvis is at No.8 with Love Letters – for my money, his finest ballad performance. Meanwhile Frank Sinatra is still hanging-in there with the doleful Strangers In the Night. The Lovin’ Spoonful’s Summer In The City is heading up towards, and The Hollies’ Bus Stop is coming down from the top 10.
Sitting just outside the chart that week we have Otis Redding, The Temptations, The Beach Boys and Mamas & The Papas.
